150-300 hours English Council ITESOL Course Syllabus

The English Council’s ITESOL course is designed to allow participants to either achieve a basic certificate, a certificate with credit or a Diploma, which all depends on one’s effort and quality of work. The course offers not only a full introduction to the essential ESL skills and knowledge necessary but also the essential training and preparation to Diploma Level in TESOL. Throughout the course, you will be shown the different forms of English around the world, with the main ones being England’s English and American-English. This course includes a host of added extras to improve your confidence and ability to produce good lessons every time. You will learn about the tricky subjects of English grammar and English pronunciation, improving your capability and employability.

The ITESOL certificate course will help you to be able to teach all manner of students, plus being able to specialise in teaching particular students and specific types of English classes. As well as the comprehensive all-round training, which will enable you to be versatile preparing you to be able to teach all levels and all ages of students, both adults and young learners, there will also be the modules to help you specialise in teaching different aspects of English, including business and professional English, dyslexic ESL students and online teaching.

The ITESOL course is an ideal course if you want to get a high-level ITESOL certificate and be prepared for any eventuality in your future teaching, either in class or online.

Undergoing an ITESOL course is probably the best way to learn, analyse and fully understand all aspects and all varieties of the English Language that are used around the world.

The English Council ITESOL Course gives youan internationally recognised TESOL certificate, with knowledge of all the main varieties of English throughout the world because of its authentic classroom teaching time, with genuine students at all levels, which will be perfected, assessed and graded.

The reason why the English Council’s ITESOL course is shown as a 150–300-hour course is because it all depends on the overall effort you put in and the final scores you achieve, reflecting the hours and effort you put into your studies and achievement.

For example:

If you just flip through each unit with the minimum of effort and achieve a basic score on your final exams, achieving 60 to 74% overall you would receive a Certificate of ITESOL
If you make more of an effort and achieve a good score on your final exams, achieving 75 to 94% overall you would receive a Certificate with Credit of ITESOL
If you make a real concerted effort and go that extra mile and achieve an excellent score on your final exams, achieving 95% or above overall you would receive a Diploma of ITESOL
The final certificate or diploma you receive will be determined by the English Council’s Examination board, after careful scrutiny of all your course assignments, video recordings of your teaching and your final exam results.

Aims & Objectives of the English Council ITESOL course

Aim:

To provide trainees with the skills and knowledge to teach and reflect upon English as a Foreign or Second Language at the best level of the trainee’s capabilities, with three levels obtainable, depending on overall course achievement: - Pass - Pass with Credit and the Full Diploma Level, equivalent to a master’s degree (Level 7 of the UK National Qualifications Framework.

Objectives:

Trainees will be expected to demonstrate the following learning outcomes on completion of the course at one of the three levels possible. Pass – Pass with Credit or a full Diploma. Certificates or Diplomas are only awarded when one meets the passing criteria at the desired level.

Language:

An in-depth understanding of the systems of contemporary English (phonology, grammar, lexis and discourse) commonly taught in beginner to advanced syllabuses.
The ability to identify the language background, needs, motivation and cultural context of learners and teachers with an understanding of the ever-changing roles of English in different regions of the world.
To have an all-round International knowledge of the main variations of the English Language around the world.

Learning and Teaching:

A critical understanding of current and historical developments in language learning theory and teaching methodology, with reference to ESOL.
Familiarity with issues related to motivation and second language acquisition.
The ability to plan, design and deliver a series of ESOL lessons appropriate to learners’ language needs and learning styles as individuals and as a group.
The ability to design, deliver and evaluate a language programme over an extended period.
The ability to assess learners’ knowledge of and skill in English.
An understanding of the main methods and forms of assessment for beginners up to advanced learners of all ages and for all required purposes.

Personal and Professional Development:

The ability to assess and develop their own effectiveness as a language teacher.
The ability to provide principled professional support to teachers with less experience.
An appreciation of the principles of teamwork and classroom-based investigation.
A sharp awareness of teaching observation and appropriate feedback at an International TESOL level.
